A Long History of Service

  • 1967 – Better Family Planning, Inc. was founded as a private non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation
    • Greater St. Matthews Medical Health Center opens as the first clinic
  • 1968 – Christian Street Medical Health Center, 2053 Christian Street opened.
    • Clara Baldwin Medical Health Center, 2136 North 27th Street opened
    • Haven House Medical Health Center, 5900 Pine Street opened
  • 1969 – Broad Street Medical Health Center opened
  • 1970 – Jones Memorial Medical Health Center, 1937 West Dauphin Street opened.
  • 1983 – Received designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) by the D.H.H.S
  • 1984 – Name changed from Better Family Planning to Spectrum Health Services mission
    • The Haddington Health Center (HHC) commenced delivery of primary care health services
  • 1988 – In addition to family planning, prenatal, pediatric and adult health care services were added
    • Continuity of care is provided for through relationships with Children’s Hospital, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Mercy Hospital, and Pennsylvania Hospital
  • 1991 – Spectrum Health Services (SHS) was instrumental in the establishment of the first in-house school-based health program for students of the Mayer Sulzberger Middle School in West Philadelphia. The funding for this program ended in April 2000
  • 1994 – Broad Street Health Center (BSHC) commenced Primary services
  • 2001 – The original Haddington Site of 1,000 square feet grew to 9,229 square feet. 
  • 2002 – The Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC) creates the Carolyn G. Baxter Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the former CEO of Spectrum Health Services, who passed suddenly in 2001
  • 2004 – In January 2004, Phyllis B. Cater took the helm as the Chief Executive Officer
  • 2011 – Phyllis B. Cater began planning for the development of a 36,000 sq. ft. facility and, construction of the new health center began in the spring of 2011
  • 2012 – On July 12, 2012 Spectrum Health Services celebrated the groundbreaking of a $14 million health facility in West Philadelphia. The 36,000 square foot facility located at 52nd and Haverford Avenue, Spectrum Community Health Center (SCHC), was completed in July 2013
  • 2013 – On September 27, 2013, Spectrum Health Services, Inc. held a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for its new facility
  • 2014 – Broad Street Health Center (BSHC) celebrates 20 years of services
    • In 2014, Spectrum Health Dental Services began seeing patients, through its 8 operatories and state-of-the-art dental equipment
    • Spectrum Community Health Center (SCHC) earned LEED Silver Certification.
  • 2015 – Opened the Reed Street Health Center (RSHC) to expand our services in the South Philadelphia area
  • 2017 – Recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as a Level-3 Patient-Centered Medical Home, the highest designation for health centers
    • SHS celebrates 50th Anniversary
  • 2019 – In July 2019, Veronica Hill-Milbourne took the helm as the Chief Executive Officer and President
